Dementia
A deterioration of mental faculties including memory, abstract thought, judgement, impulse control, and intellectual abilities. Dementia impairs occupational and social functioning and leads to a change in personality.
Alzheimer Disease
A progressive atrophy of cortical tissue, marked by memory impairment, intellectual deterioration, changes in mood and behavior, difficulty with day to day functions, disorientation of time and place.
Lewy Body Dementia
Similiar in symptoms to Alzheimer disease, but the progression of the disease is much more rapid and memory impairment may not be present in the early stage of Lewy Body. Symptoms can also include visual hallucinations during times of increased confusion. Physical symptoms are similar to that of Parkinson's Disease including stooped posture, slow movement, muscle rigidity and tremors.
Vascular Dementia
Usually has a sudden onset following one or multiple strokes. Individuals may deteriorate, stabilize, and deteriorate again. Symptoms may vary and include language, vision, and memory impairment and emotional outbursts.
